Luis Aparicio Ortega is a former professional baseball player from Venezuela who was born on April 29, 1934. Aparicio played most of his career as a shortstop, and he is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players to ever play the position. He played in the Major Leagues from 1956 to 1973, spending most of his career with the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles.
Aparicio was a 13-time All-Star, and he won nine Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding defense. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, and his number 11 has been retired by both the White Sox and the Orioles. Aparicio was also a key player for the Venezuelan national team, and he helped lead them to their first ever World Baseball Classic appearance in 2006 as part of the coaching staff. Aparicio is considered a legend of Venezuelan baseball, and he was one of the first players from Latin America to achieve a high level of success in the Major Leagues.
